Roland Richards is an experienced human resources development professional, educated to Masters level and backed by over thirty years of high achievement in both private and public sector environments.  Over the last twenty years he has successfully delivered numerous high profile consultancy assignments with large organisations including a national newspaper group, major banks, oil & manufacturing companies, NHS organisations, HE Institutions, community & voluntary sector organisations as well as the wider public sector.

 

In addition, he has worked extensively with small businesses to provide them with strategic direction and business survival skills. He has designed and delivered a variety of management development and change management programmes and coaches in specific skills such as influencing, strategic thinking, critical decision making, business strategy, team development and personal effectiveness.

 

Roland specialises in the design of integrated development solutions that engage the client and his success in this area has resulted in several discreet, long-term coaching/mentoring relationships that include a plethora of Chief Executives, Finance Directors, HR/Personnel Directors and other senior executives across public, private and voluntary sectors. In addition, he is often asked to mentor/coach individuals to improve performance, resolve management/staffing issues, or to assist with career development.

 

He has spent a major part of his career in the recruitment specialism, recruiting staff, advising on assessment centres and training employers to interview effectively. This experience, when uniquely combined with his training in marketing and high impact communications has enabled him to enjoy significant success in moving people through various career transitions from redundancy/unemployment to employment; and from employment to promotion as well as other career advancement.

 

Through programmes such ‘Train to Gain’, he has worked closely with a number of MDs, entrepreneurs and small businesses. Typically this work has centred on developing the personal effectiveness of the client, enhancing results through influencing, communication, rapport and management skills.  In addition, on a more strategic level, Roland has provided consultancy to businesses to develop strategic direction, help protect the business against the economic pressures and assist the business leader in areas such as critical decision making, presentations to clients, networking, strategic thinking and leading others through inspiration and presence.

 

He has designed training materials and manuals for an extensive programme of ‘valuing diversity’ training and delivered the package widely across the Department of Health and the Commission for Social Care Inspection.  Other successful projects include the design of a Management Development Programme for the NHS Estates Executive Agency and the production of a substantial training manual for a large Careers Services provider, offering Personal & Career Development Strategies/Interventions to Careers Development Professionals.

 

In 2011 he successfully delivered a Management Development Programme for 40 NHS Finance staff across London and was re-engaged to deliver the same programme each year to present.  He is involved with a significant amount of outplacement support work for those experiencing redundancy or the threat of, nationwide.  Other recent consultancy projects include the delivery of a London-wide Talent Management Strategy for senior NHS Finance staff and project managing a consultation process for a major restructure in a NHS Strategic Health Authority.  

 

In addition he has worked closely with NHS NW in the design and delivery of their Leadership Development Programme for over 100 senior finance staff aspiring to become a Finance Director.  He has also been involved in an ongoing programme of organisational surveys and team development programmes for NHS organisations across London. In the more recent past he worked closely with the Executive Team of a UK University providing leadership development through a process of 360 degree assessment and mentoring/coaching follow up.  Between 2013 and 2015 he has also worked closely with the NHS London Leadership Academy on projects including Talent Management and Transformational Coaching.

 

Over the last twelve years he has worked extensively with the NHS producing national training packages for 14,000 NHS staff.  Products have included:

 

A Personal Portfolio Package (2003 - A career & personal development manual integrated with performance management and competence systems);

A blended learning Mentoring Package encompassing good practice guidelines, policies, strategies and training modules (2004) which is currently being used successfully across large parts of the NHS;

A HR Performance & Development Excellence Accreditation Manual that won a NHS John Havelock Commendation and has been adopted as a standard across London (2005/6);

A Talent Management research project providing impetus for developing a groundbreaking local talent management strategy for the NHS which won a HFMA National Award for innovation in December 2008.

A Talent Management Toolkit and Talent Tracking Tool which has been rolled out across NHS London in 2009 in support of the development strategy to create a pool of high quality candidates for Finance Director posts of the future.

A new Talent Management Toolkit which was shortlisted for a HFMA National Award for innovation in December 2014.

The development of a groundbreaking quality based accreditation standard in partnership with ACCA, CIMA, AAT and CIPFA to enable NHS organisations to achieve their Employer Accreditation Awards through the achievement of one NHS based quality standard (2014-15).

Roland has delivered a series of coaching and mentoring workshops for NHS organisations, and following his successful design of a national publication on personal/career development planning for 14,000 finance staff in the NHS, he has delivered a number of personal/management development interventions to the NHS nationwide.

 

In March 2005 he delivered his first intranet based e-learning product - a HR Facilitators’ Toolkit for NHS South East to support the implementation of training and development initiatives by members of the national NHS Finance Staff Development Network.  This was followed up in October 2005 with an e-learning based equality and diversity awareness training product aimed at tackling issues through self-understanding, which has been successfully implemented in the Public Sector.

 

He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), was Vice Chair and Policy Advisor for the CIPD North Yorkshire Branch between 2000/2005 and is also a Full Member of the Institute of Business Consultants (IBC). He successfully facilitated a CIPD National HQ funded initiative to develop Mentoring, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Lifelong Learning in Yorkshire.

He spends part of his free time mentoring people through Masters degree studies and for their CIPD Professional Qualifications and until 2004 was External Moderator for two colleges offering the CIPD professional qualifications, which involved the quality assurance of course materials, double-marking assignments/dissertations and reviewing overall course outputs.  

 

He is also an External Assessor for the NHS London Accrediting Excellence Framework – Promoting Good Practice.   He is a qualified Master Practitioner in the Margerison/McCann Team Management Systems, a suite of Level B self-assessment tools recognised by the British Psychological Society.  He has used these systems extensively as part of his coaching and consultancy activities to develop teams & individuals, career counsel, promote cohesion at leadership level and as an influencing tool.

 

He is a past President of York Junior Chamber of Commerce having served as both President and Training & Development Director for two years.  During that time, he worked with the Executive Committee of British Junior Chamber to help develop a CPD policy and national training standards for the organisation.  

 

On a more personal note, Roland is committed to helping the career development of young people and working with unemployed people, teaching CV, interview and communication skills, etc.  He has supported this in the past with lecturing on Personal & Professional Development (undergraduate level) and the ADAPT (post-graduate level) project at York St. John University. These were key courses developing career management skills for undergraduates and the unemployed as well as developing higher-level skills in SMEs.  In recent years he was a Cohort Leader for the University of Bradford’s M.Ed. in Training and Development and from time to time he facilitates CV and career development workshops for lecturing staff at York St. John University.

 

As part of his continuing professional development he was a speaker at an international conference for teaching, training and HR Management in Helsinki.  His two seminars covered influencing with integrity, using rapport within the workplace to solve business problems and personal development planning.  He has been a speaker on managing change at the National Operational Research Conference, and he was a speaker at a number of NHS Conferences/Seminars covering Mentoring, Family-Friendly Policy and Accrediting Excellence and Surviving Career Transitions.

 

In addition, he has presented seminars for both the CIPD and York Junior Chamber of Commerce on subjects such as influencing, career development, coaching/mentoring, presentation skills, interview skills and stress management.  He continues to keep up to date with HR theory and practice using an ongoing involvement with his M.Ed. networks and through this is currently working on publications related to career development, coaching and life skills.
